Production log - Unit 62

tue 20th November 2012

Today, I was absent so Dieter had to continue off from Mondays lesson in which he began to write a letter to Mr Hutchinson. It was good that he was given this time as it would have allowed him to fully evaluate the letter ensuring it was appropriate and there was no mistakes. It is essential to make the first letter to your client proffesional and formal as it will set a good first image of our group and help us understand the format we could copy when we have to write a second letter. As I was off from school, I had no input on what Dieter wrote on the letter but Dieter sent me via email what the content of the email to our client was. I thought it was very proffesional and I would have written the same thing if i was present with him in the lesson.  For the next email we have to send, I will be fully committed to inputting my ideas and thoughts into the email.
Today, I was off ill and didnt get a chance to help Dieter write and send the email. But below is evidance of the email sent to Mr Hutchinson concerning our meeting.

Dear Mr Hutchinson,
I am writing to you on behalf of DIP™ this is because we want to schedule some meetings about the web designs.
The first of which we will want to discuss market research and design ideas, we want to find out who our target audience will be, what colour schemes, what you are interested in; content wise and what other websites you would recommend as a faculty.
We will create some initial sketches, these will be brainstorms and mind maps based on the first meeting, in this meeting we will show you what we have made, you can give us feedback on this therefor we can make a better website that the faculty will like.
In the final meeting we want to schedule, we will have made changes based on your feedback and show you what we have done.
Please email back as soon as possible to make a meeting.
Yours sincerely,
Dieter Corbin &
Jessica Saunders. DIP™

We decided to do this over email as it was the most proffesional method to contact him and also it can be easily stored as evidence To make all our emails as proffesional as this to any client, we could use this as a template which will help us not only gain a good understanding of how to write powerful letters, but keep the client in touch. If our emails where unprofessional on an official business project for example, we could find ourselves being excluded from the project for not being formal enough to the client. For the next email we send I will fully cooperate into the content and ensure it is up to the same standard.

To help us gain an understanding of the places we could record in around the school, Mrs Merrick involved us in a recce. A rece is simply visually observing a target location prior to the main operation. We went to the fitness suite, the sports hall, to the tennis court, to the sports field and in the changing rooms. So we had evidence of the recce we went on, each group borrowed a school camera and took a variety of different shots from each angle. By doing this, we got a feel of what the places we will be filming are like as well as understanding camera angles we may have to consider. For example if we wanted to record a trampolining lesson, We cannot record with the tripod on the floor as it wont capture the student jumping in the air. To come across this we would have to put the tripod on a table and record in a wide shot to get a clear full shot of the pupil.
These consisted of the fitness suit, playing field, sports hall, tennis court. We also got photos of the sports cupboards, notice boards, grade charts etc. that we could potentially put onto our website. Me and Dieter both got a lot of inspiration from this and felt it was a good way for us to have an experience of the places we can go to record the best aspects of the school. A weakness of this was the weather as it was raining we got very poor shots of the playing field and tennis court. To change this we can re take the photos when the weather is brighter and maybe even whilst a class is partaking a PE lesson on the field. Other groups got more photos around the school, but we felt that they would be irrelevant to the subject of the project and stuck to the PE department to take our photos.

tue 27th November 2012

During this lesson we where asked to create a Gantt chart of all the deadlines we have been set for Mrs Merricks side of the course. We did this on a software named Microsoft Project. This was slightly easy as we had already created one with Mr Zafar, however i still struggled a little. This was good as we had both sides of the course deadlines to meet up to in case we needed reminding. This was a bad thing as Gantt charts aren't my strength and I struggled to get it done in a quick time. A Gantt chart is a type of bar chart that illustrates a project schedule that we created   Microsoft project software. However to help us get used to the software, We created a Gantt chart on how to create tea. Below is a screen shot of this. Before hand, we actually made tea and drank it whilst creating this gantt chart of how we did it and how long it took. This was a good introduction for the lesson as it allowed people like me who had never used the software before, to have a taster into what had to be done to make a successful chart. To make it sucsesfull, a chart must require all the milestones you will encounter, in our case school holidys and inset days and also the correct timings for when you will complete each task set. These are deadlines that have to completed in order to achieve the best grade. Personally, even after using the gantt chart in the introduction to making tea, I still found it was very technical and I struggled to work it. All the other groups had used it before and successfully used it. It took me around at least two weeks to have a complete knowledge of how to use the software, Which put me and Dieter a little behind. As Dieter and the other members of our class had used this software and created Gantt charts before, they found it automatically easy to complete this and got it all done in the lesson. It is a good opportunity as if i ever had to face this in the future if I was involved in a project I would be able to work it and get my work done quicker. Also, it gives us a document that we can refer to in order to see our deadlines and milestones that we may have forgotten.

wed 28th november 2012

This was an inset day for the school so Mrs Merrick set us work via email. This was for us to complete word documents AS1, AS2 and AS3 which where saved on frog  Once we had done this we had to upload the AS1 document onto frog. This was a lot of work set as we have four hours of media on that day and we missed out on a lot of work. Each document took a very long time to complete, but was very helpful as it gave us a wider understanding of what we have to consider for own topic, but also what other project managers have to consider For example, as the school covers finance for our project, it was unnecessary for us to research into this. However if we where a larger proffesional business who had to hire out equipment and facilities, we would have to save up a lot of money and also partake in fundraising to earn enough money. This required us to explain and elaborate each subheading in relation to our own project, and if we didn't have to consider the, we had to discuss what we would have to do if we where possibly in that situation. For example, in our project we don't have to consider finance as it is completely covered by the teachers. However if we did, we would have to consider room hire, transport, hire of equipment and much more. This gives us chance to gather an understanding of what other projects require in there pre production and even though some where irrelevant to our project, it would give us a clearer view if we had to do it in another project. A weakness of this is that I wasn't sure how much detail to go into when discussing time. I was unsure whether we had to fill in our deadlines and milestones that we have entered on our Gantt chart or simply just discuss that all the information was already saved on a document. The second document AS2 involved us to look on the website of intellectual property office (www.ipo.gov.uk). Underneath the task explanation where a number of questions we had to answer with the information off the website. These questions where all based on the copyright section of the website.
Me and my partner Dieter both struggled with a few of these questions as we couldn't find any information for them on the website. Despite this it furthermore gave us a clear understanding that copyright is a key part and is very important when creating a project, specifically as we intend to use video, music and pictures in our own project. The third task was named AS3 which was a table that we had to adjust to suit our own project. This was a simple task but none of us where certain on how to adjust it to suit the question task. All these tasks where very helpful as we got to see what other projects have to consider, as well as what we have to consider. We have learnt that pre production considerations are vital to ensure you have a successful project within the lines of the law. For example you cannot use a song if you haven't had permission from the creator.

tue 4th December 2012

In this lesson Mrs Merrick was off and we was set work to do over email. This consisted of us getting into groups and talking through the pre production considerations we had to complete on our inset day. We found that not all people in the class got into groups and many of us still had a few more adjustments to make to our work. Instead we just got on with our work and continued to meet the deadline of today. This was better for me as I needed to finish four questions on the AS2 sheet and wouldn't have been able to discuss and go through any of my work due to its in-completion. This is the email in which she sent to us to show us what we had to accomplish in her absence.

Year 12 CM p.4 AR08
Use today's lesson to work together to share and talk about what you have written in last week's task eg. personnel, finance etc and your considerations for these in this project.
Work in the following groups and discuss each key word and what it means:

  • Dieter, Josh, Edna, Deniz

  • Nicole, Sam, Maqsood, Jessica

Use what you have learnt from your discussion to adjust/add/refine what you have written - then copy up onto your blog on a new page entitled:
Unit 62 Pre-production considerations
(Make sure this is typed up by Wednesday 5th Dec p.1.)
(Also - last time I looked at your blogs - some of you were not keeping your reflective learning log up to date - be sure to write up your experience of your meeting with Mr. Hutchinson  listing the main points that you have discovered. Be sure to REFLECT on your progress and your personal performance  eg. how confident were you?  How could you improve your communication techniques?  Were you well planned/prepared for the meeting?)  I'll check these again on Wednesday also.
Mrs M.
This email was very helpful as it told us our specific lesson plan, so we had guidance even though she want here. If any of us had queries about the work she also suggested that we email her or find Mr Collins or another teacher who could help us.

Wed 5th December 2012

This is the email Mrs Merrick sent us so we where aware of the work we had to complete whilst she was off on a training course in the afternoon.

Use this afternoon to catch up on the following:
Update your blog:

  • Reflective learning log (interview with mr hutchinson, storyboarding, Gantt chart, recce)

Finish Gantt Chart
Complete Pre-Production Considerations
Continue/improve storyboard (more card can be collected from repro if needed)
Mrs M.

- hand out of storyboard typology of what sign means what - looked at celtix website again - shown document of shot types
During this lesson we made initial designs of the plan of our video and what will be featured in each scene. We had around 13 small sheets of card in which we had to draw each scene onto. Once we had done this we had to stick it to the wall or window so that as a class we could evaluate the good and bad points about them. We where also asked to write a summary on the back of the card describing what camera angle was used and what the scene would entail.
This being the task set, we already decided that we would vary in camera angles to show our technological understanding and a different aspect to each scene instead of it being tedious and repetitive with only one angle used. This was good criticism as it would give us more inspiration for if we had to create or develop on our original storyboard. The first scene was a still image of Mr Hutchinson, Mr Pickard and Mrs Hampton standing in the centre of the card. Then underneath them at around hip level is a sign saying Bluecoat PE department. We didn't draw this on but a further idea was to add a few animations of footballs being kicked around or something sport relevant to make it more aesthetically pleasing. A further suggestion would be to add in the corner of the scene a small video that will be playing an insignificant part of a PE lesson and will further increase when the still image has been on for around 10 seconds. The box with the video will then expand filling the majority of the screen, whilst the still image pans out. This part of the video will be playing the significant and important part of the lesson. The rest of the scenes will then flow smoothly from there. As we have been recommended to add interviews in our video, we have decided to have one of Mr Hutchinson, Mr Pickard and Mrs Hampton. To break this up so there is not too much talking from teachers, we have decided to put two sports/PE lessons in between each teachers interview. Also on the scene where the teacher is being interviewed, it is split in half to show on one half the interview and on the other a pan of the school. Depending on the length of the first interview, we thought it would be good to show all the sporting halls and facilities a side the school so there is a clear view of them before we show footage of lessons.
The second and third interviews will again be aside a sport or club that the school caters for to show the schools variety in sporting activities We aim for there to be humour in the interviews and also in the videos such as funny mistakes, For example getting hit by the ball. This will make the video more aesthetically pleasing and keep the viewer engaged through out. However no-one will be harmed in this video. When the videos of the sports are being played, quotes from students and relevant facts will be shown to show the pupils side of the PE department as well as the teachers. An automatic disadvantage with this is that I couldn't draw as well as Dieter and my drawings where not as clear and proficient Also another weakness was that we only had around 9 sketches where as the rest of the groups had a lot more. For example Sam and Josh in the other group made a large number of detailed drawings that where moderately clear to understand. This is what we must gain inspiration and techniques from in order to draw an extremely good storyboard. Mrs Merrick also pointed out that many of our drawings where not as clear as they could have been. The square of the card was supposed to be the camera lenses so you had to draw what you would specifically see from the camera. In one of ours we drew a trampoline mid air of the card. We established this wasn't as detailed as it could have been and we could have improved it by drawing out the floor and the students around the trampoline spotting.

Tue 11th December 2012

Today, we watched a short video clip involving 2 robots discussing what makes a good detailed reflective learning logs. We then applied this to our own reflective logs to improve them to make them the best they can be. For example the robots where discussing all the features required to make a perfect reflective log. These where simple things such as using correct wording and grammer that will make our work seem that but more proffesional.

Wed 12th December 2012

In this lesson, went on another recce in order to take pictures of all the places that will feature in our video. As our video requires different sports, we took pictures of exquipment and other members of our class participating in some of these. For example, Dieter, Maqsood and josh went to kick a football to each other on the field. These pictures helped us get a visual of  we created a storyboard on  a software called celtx. This was new to everyone in our class and we all found it very easy to use. We where asked to use photos that we had taken

Tue 18th December 2012

In this lesson we have been doing research into risk assessments in order to complete the following quiestions.
1) what is a risk assessment?
2) How are risk assessments used in the media production industry?
3) Find example risk assessment templates and comment on how appropriate they are or are not for your project.
A risk assessment is the evaluation of the level of risks in a certain situation compared with the allowance of acceptable risk in an area. There are 5 steps to making a risk assessment. Firstly, you must identify the hazards. This is crucial as it is the key part of the entire assessment, and it must be correct. For example, many risks or hazards could be unspotted in a location and therefore increase the risk of injury. In relation to my project, I would scan the locations i will use in my video, for example the sports hall, to ensure that there was no danger or risks of a pupil or teacher. The second step is to decide and find out who could possibly be at risk in that situation. This will be a number of people in my project as myself, my partner Dieter, teachers and pupils could all be at risk. Especially considering the safety of children as they are a massive ethical issue to any risk assessment. The third step is evaluate the risks and decide upon production. This means to evaluate all the area thoroughly and decide how to assess it.
In the media industry, to ensure the risk assessment you create is appropriate you must specify what exact media category you fit into. This is simply due to the fact if you worked in radio broadcasting but evaluated the safety of a film set, it would be irrelevant and a waste of time. It is important to identify your responsibilities as a manager of a project to understand and work on these. For example in our project our main priority is to ensure the safety of the children in confidentiality and the equipment to be safe enough for them to use. In a more professional sense, the main responsibility despite safety is the viewer or listener of any media production. this could include both together, for example if the media was theatre, you would have to ensure the seating is secure for a number of different viewers so they are both satisfied and out of harms way. When making videos you have to concern the viewer as well as the safety of the people in it. Specifically to our criteria we have to concern the audience of the video on the website, that is targeted at parents mainly and also the safety of them. For example if a person was epileptic and there was flashing in our video, we would have to consider this and add a warning. Specifically to the students In the video, the students would have to be informed on how they need to behave in order to keep themselves safe,
) Find example risk assessment templates and comment on how appropriate they are or are not for your project.

Wed 19th December 2012

During this lesson we began to create a wall of all our work so we could analyse what we had done so far in our project and evaluate it. This would help us see everything we have done as a total and show us where we can improve and what else we need to catch up on. For the morning lessons, we caught up with all the work we needed too in order to have it all ready and prepared to print off for the afternoon lessons. Me and dieter both worked on our production logs, our gantt chart and ...... However, I didn't get all my production log completed and I had to re adjust some of my work. All members of my class printed most of there work out and stuck it up on their area of the wall where as I was waiting for the coloured printer so it could be more vibrant. There was many issues with the printers which prevented many members of the group printing all there work off in colour. To improve the productiveness of lesson I could have got my work done quicker and therefore got to pint off my work earlier. I will print all my work off in colour before the beginning of next lesson so that they can be ready for putting straight up on the wall so I am back on track of all my work.

Monday 7th January 2013

Due to Mr Zafar's absance we did some work for mrs Merrick instead which involved watching a video of another school who where showing examples of each camera angle. We where then asked to remake this and make our own version of each camera angle. We asked our friends, Linh and James to help us in some of the shots, for example the dolly shot and 2 point shot. This lesson was very easy for us as we both already had previous knowladge of each camera angle and didn't need to do any excess research on each one. Dieter bought up a document he made during his old course of each camera shot to help us just incase we needed it. This was our main strength of this lesson. However our weakness was that we didn't keep to filming during lesson time, and therefore had to work through break to complete it. Another is we struggled to think of new imaginative ways to remake the original video so we used the same people, leaving our shots with little variety and originality. Once we did this we uploaded them and saved them to our guinsburg area. The class was still working hard regardless of not having a teacher, and we helped in each others shots. We featured in each others shots somehow and this benefited each group. Next lesson we plan to create a shooting schedule and understand when we can record each lesson for our video.

Tue 8th January 2013

Today, we have been told that every lesson from now on we will be free for us to record and do whatever we have to do until our deadline, the 25th of January. Dieter and myself worked on a shooting schedule of on what day we would film which scene. This will be of great use to us as we will see our weeks arrangements in a clear format and be able to adjust and add in anything necessary. As we where still uncertain of when we should do all our shots, we decided to work backwards and leave a slight gap between each day of filming. We hope to do the teachers interviews as soon as possible so their time is not delayed further. On  word document, we wrote up the lesson times where we could film on each day. This was easier as we made a few adjustments before we saved it to our schedule. Our strengths where that we had consistently good communication skills through this task and we where considerate of our other lessons and exams during this week. Also, we where very good at understanding and working our way through the software. We used celtx to do our shooting schedules as it is very professional and easy to use.  Our weakness however was that we took too long organising and altering our schedule and fell behind in comparison to the rest of the group. Next lesson we plan to finish this off and add detail to each shoot in our celtx document.

Wed 9th Jaunary 2013

During this lesson, Dieter had to attend a revision class for his exam the following day so i had no partner. This did not affect our schedule or plans as we had nothing specifically arranged to do today other than catch up on our work from yesterday. For the morning i added each shoot and the specific  detail to each. This ensures that i had got us all up to date and therefore ready to continue with any other arrangements in the afternoon with no set backs. Mrs Merrick suggested during our last lesson that it would be a good idea to get used to shooting with the cameras so we could get straight into filming when the day comes of a proper shoot. We may consider doing this as it will help us prepare and understand how to use it. For example, at the beginning of each shoot it is necessary for one person to record why the other directs and uses the clicker. This clicker is a black and white board with all relevant data on of the specific shoot so the viewer and ourselves are aware and can trace it if needed. We where each given a clicker on a piece of card which was laminated so we could write on our details and if we wrote something wrong we could rub it and and restart. This will help us when it comes to editing all our videos together as well as give indication to the participants in the video when they must start preforming what they have been asked to do. We where also given a hand out document were we had to fill out every shot we did and the further details of it, such as the date and time. Even if we do a shot thats incorrect or at an incorrect angle we will still list in in the chart we have been given. This will be good for us at will allow us to have different ways of accessing the data if we cannot find any recollection on the computer, or even if the writing on the clicker is too small.A strength of this lesson was that even though Dieter wasn't here for the morning, the work we needed to do was caught up on and done. In the afternoon part of our lesson we where asked to get used to the video cameras and how to use them effectively. To do this, I recorded dieter playing guitar, in a music room. This was beneficial for me as i had very little experience with using the video camera, where as Dieter had.

Thurs 10th January 2013

I was not present in this lesson as I had to revise for exam that afternoon. We had no major recording plans for this lesson as we prepared for this when making our shooting schedule. Dieter also had an exam but he joined he last part of the lesson. This however was a negative as we both missed an hour of vital lesson time where we could be catching up with our blogs and working n each of our celtx projects.

Fri 11th January 2013

During this lesson we focused on our blogs and caught up to date on our production logs. Our original plans where to go over to wollaton as there was a football match occurring. We felt this would be great footage for our video and it will cover one of our shoots that require us to record a football lesson. It would also show the school has a high football team as they go into championships with other schools. However we was told today that the match was canceled due to a lack in players on the opposing team. This was a major disadvantage but we have other alternatives to what we will record. An advantage the majority of the class got as well as us, was that again we had time to update our blogs and ensure we where up to date.

Mon 14th January 2013

In this lesson, we simply worked on our blogs and sent emails to certain teachers scheduling interviews.      We emailed Mr Pickard asking him if we can interview him, discussing matters such as grades from in the PE department. We didn't receive an email back during this lesson which preventing us from planning other interviews and recording sessions. Sending them the information via email was a more professional way instead of simply meeting them around school and asking. This is also a strength as it can also be recorded and shown to anyone who needs to witness our professionalism.

Tue 15th January 2013

We received an email back from Mr Pickard questioning why we needed him,  as it would be more beneficial if we asked Mr Tickle due to his higher status. This caused us a lot of problems with making our storyboards and scripts as we had already based it around having 3 interviews. To solve this we then decided we would not have an third interview with Mr Pickard and add in another video instead. This left us questioning the layout of our video and how we could fill in gaps, further more leaving us slightly behind. this was our biggest disadvantage that we came across during this lesson and had a major effect on our hole project. We must ensure that we figure this all out before our next deadline. An advantage of this was that we had a response from Mr Pickard and could then work around it for our upcoming shooting sessions.  Next lesson we plan to do a draw up of a new plan for our story board and make it up to the same standard as our previous one.

Wed 16th January 2013
Today, in this lesson we are catching up on our blogs and responding to emails until we went to record our first piece of footage. In period 3, we would record the year 7 boys in the soports hall playing football and once we have done we will upload this footage to our computer. We still are awaiting conformation from Mr Hutchinson that we are allowed to record during his lesson, so went to try and find him at break. We went to see Mr Hutchinson to confirm if we were allowed to record in his lesson. He agreed to this and told us the lesson will be taking place in the sports hall. During break we went to print off our consent forms in the library. This took slightly longer than expected as we printed out 50 copies. We decided on 50 copies as we may have needed spares and also the ones we didn't use we could use them for our next shoot. Whilst i stayed by the printer to collect the consent forms, Dieter went to the sports hall to set up the tripod and let Mr Hutchinson now we was there. This may have looked unprofessional and appear as unprepared for recording lesson. To ensure we don't give this impression off again we will ensure we are fully prepared for the schedule and arrive early so we are already set up and ready to record. When i arrived at the sports hall i wrote out the information that needed to be filled in on the clicker. This ensured we where prepared and ready for the footage and wouldn't delay our recording time. We got 5 shots of the students playing football at different angles so that we would have a choice when it came down to editing the video together later on. Our disadvantage was the fact that we where slightly delayed due to the consent forms. However, our advantage was that we got good footage and was prepared after the delay to make up for the unprofessional before.
- emailed mrs hampton originally

Thurs 17th January 2013

I had an exam on this day so i didn't attend the lesson. On this day we planned an interview with Mr Hutchinson to discuss
1) Do you think children doing PE will help them now and in the future?
2) What current activities does the school have to offer?
3) Do you feel that children should do more PE outside of school?
4) Do you think that the Olympics have had an effect on a children and sports?
5) Why do you think it is important for children to have PE lessons?
6) Do you think the school PE teams are doing well?
From Dieters feedback, the interview went very well and i will watch it later on in the week.. Dieter wrote these before the interview in the lesson as the interview was later on. These questions are what the viewer may want to know about the schools PE department, especially to the students as they get a wider understanding of what activities are on offer. But, it also benefits parents of future students as they get to see how important PE is to the pupils and how serious they take it.  The disadvantage of this day was that i couldn't attend, however this was contradicted as an advantage was that even in my absence we got a good interview recorded for our video.

Fri 18th January 2013

In this lesson we caught up on everything we needed to and also uploaded footage of the interview Dieter did with Mr Hutchinson  This was an advantage for us as it ensured we would have more time later in the week for recording and have less stress of remembering what we did each in each day. This was a productive lesson as we also sent and checked emails to arrange video sessions in PE lessons. In this lesson, I emailed Mrs peel about recording her trampoling lesson today period 5. However after break we got a reply saying that the year 11's come out of an exam at that time so no lesson is scheduled. This was a disadvantage for us as it meant we lost a video for us to record this week.

Mon 21st January 2013

In this lesson we worked on our blogs we emailed teachers to set more recording sessions. This lesson went very poorly and a lot of problems where caused during. I originally read the master PE lesson schedule wrong and sent Mrs Peel an email asking her if we could record her Athletics lesson. She then replied saying it wasn't occuring due to time of year and asking where I was getting the information from. I then realized the mistake I made and appologised. This was a disadvantage as it reduced our professionalism to the PE teachers and wasted a lot of time figuring and making amends. I then emailed Mr Colbeck asking him is we could record his rugby lesson today, but however didn't reply. I also arranged with Mr Hutchinson for us to record his basketball lesson tomorrow during lesson three, which was affirmed and set.  Another email sent was to Mrs vaughn to arrange recording her badminton lesson at the university on wednesday, which was again affermed and set. Lastly we finally confirmed and set a interview with Mrs Hampton at 11.30 on thursday. This was an advantage that we had all these sessions set and ensured we would get a lot of new footage. A second issue i came across in the lesson was that I accidently sent Mr Hutchinson an email from the drafts section of my email. This again reduced our proffesionalism and i had to appologise.

Tues 22nd January 2013

During this lesson, I emailed Mrs Bromley about fitness lesson on thursday and replied saying year 9s exams have cause no lesson to be schedualed. This was a major disadvantage as it delayed our recording for our deadline on friday. Another group had a simalar problem but that was down to the weather as there was heavy snow. I emailed Mrs Merrick to make her aware of this and ask if we could have a extension on our recording. This gave us more time to reschedule and get as much footage as possible, which was an overall advantage. On this day we also recorded a basketball lesson  with Mr Hutchinson which went very well. A disadvantage of this was that once we arrived at the sports hall we realised we didnt have the consent forms. Again this ment i wasnt presant to first see Mr Hutchinson as i went back to our classroom to get the consent forms.

Wed 23rd January 2013

During this lesson, we made arrangements to record Mrs Vaughans badminton lesson at 9.30. This ment in the morning we registered with Mrs Merrick, got the camera and tripod, and headed straight there. However once we arrived we waited for around half an hour for the group to turn up. After ringing the school we found out that Mrs Vaughan had changed her plans and didnt arrive at the university. This ment our lesson time was wasted and we could have been doing something more productive instead. This was a major disadvantage for us as we had a lot of other work we could be doing instead. However she did suggest to reschedual it for next wednesday instead, which was a advantage for us.

Thurs 24th January 2013

During this lesson we interviewed mrs Hampton for our video. We asked her the following questions and asked her to read out the questions and answer the during the recording.
1) How do you feel about the schools PE faculty? ( add anything else you wish to discuss)
2) How are the school teams such as the football team doing within school competitions and do they effect the overall look of the school?
3) Is the PE faculty getting high grades that affect the school?
4) Do you feel the students doing PE will help them at all?
She answered these questions how we wished and more. We where scheduled to interview her at 11.30 however it was delayed as she forgot. This wasn't a problem as we had the whole hour to record and we only needed her for a short period of time.

Fri 25th January 2013

During this lesson we where asked to try out a new software named Adobe Premiere Pro. As they where recently installed on the macs. This software was for video editing and would allow us to put all our footage we have gathered over these few weeks into a promotional video. However, me and Dieter didn't get round to this as we felt our blogs where more important to complete at this time. Even though this was a disadvantage for us as we couldn't experience the software, it was also an advantage at the same time. This is because we got chance to catch up on our blogs after the previous few days where we were recording, meaning we hadn't been so punctual as to update it. Next lesson we plan to at least attempt to try out this software.

Mon 28th January 2013

In this lesson we emailed Mrs Bromley again to see if we can record her fitness lesson on Thursday period 2. We did this as last lesson we couldn't record due to exams, which further effected our recording schedule massively. We also worked on our blogs as well to again ensure we where firmly up to date. A disadvantage of this lesson is that we again didn't go on the software Adobe Premiere Pro we were recommended to, meaning we where getting further behind. However, a group of students from another class where sharing or room and were working on this software. They asked for our opinion on their film trailer they had to make. As we where also using this software we could see how they did it and what the basics of it. Even though we didn't experience this our selves we observed others and learnt from it.  Dieter has strong knowledge on editing videos and video editing software's so we where already at an advantage.

Tues 29th January 2013

During this lesson, Dieter emailed Miss Jackson if we could record her gymnastics lesson that would almost conclude our recording. We also confirmed that we could defiantly record Mrs Vaughan's badminton lesson tomorrow due to complications last week. This was a strength as we was preparing for the rest of the week so we would have no more delays when it came to recording. However a weakness is that we didn't get immediate responses so to pass the time we had to develop our blogs.

wed 30th January 2013

In this lesson, We went to the university to record Mrs Vaughan's badminton lesson. this meant we didn't attend the first hour of our lesson but we did arrive at normal time to collect the video camera and tripod. This went very well as the university sports hall was a very well lit environment and we got plenty of clear crisp shots. Mrs Vaughan gave the most skilled players to record, so we had good effective footage to use in our video. However this didn't give us a range in talent levels to show all variety of skills that the school assists, but did therefore show the true potential that the school can offer future children. When we arrived back to the classroom we didn't have much time to begin editing our video. Instead Dieter uploaded and exported the footage from this morning on Mrs Merrick's laptop whilst i was updating my blog. Later, we
where all assigned a separate key word last week that we had to research and show a small presentation on how to use it in the new software we will be working on to make or videos. I was given the term transitions, which means the movement between each video clip that you  put into your timeline. These vary and can add a proffesional touch to your piece of work. To add a transition on this software you click effects on the toolbar in the project bin, go onto the subsection named video transitions, and simply drag the one you desire in between the two clips in your timeline. It was useful we did this as we got help from other people on sections in editing we where unsure of, for example I was unsure on how to use the three way colour effect but due to it being Josh's key word, i understood it a lot more and can therefore apply it to my own video. During each mini lesson i took lots of notes on my ipad to ensure if i needed reminding i could simply go back and re read them.  -- screen shot notes made

Thurs 31st January 2013

During this lesson, we started to work on the days we had previously missed out on this blog and try to catch up. This was mainly just a catch up lesson which proved very useful to me and Dieter as we fell behind slightly. To help us for when we begin to make our video later on, Dieter arranged the videos into folders and named each shot. He then did copied the shots in my Ginsburg area. This is not only what we where recommended to do by Mrs Merrick but also done because it will make searching for the correct clip so much easier when it comes to making our video. Next lesson, we have plans to record Miss Jackson's PE lesson and record the pan shot of around the school. As we are slightly behind due to problems we faced over these few weeks, this will give us less time to make an early start to our video like some other groups are planning to do.

Fri 1st Febuary 2013

On this day, Me and Dieter had two free periods in which we where recording Mrs Jackson's gymnastic lesson. However there was a complication in which campus the lesson was based in as we thought it was at wollaton. This meant that by the time we got to Wollaton, to be informed it was at Aspley and back, we had missed our chance to record the lesson. This was a disadvantage for us as we appeared unpunctual and un unprofessional  but we did speak to Mrs Jackson appologising  for the mishap. She informed us that we Mrs Bromely was taking a gym lesson period two that we could record if we needed too. As our recording was already slightly behind we took advantage of this and went to ask if we could record. This meant our luck had turned around as we would get some footage after all. An issue we came across however was that a lot of the religious individuals in the class did not want to be recorded and may have also had a problem with Dieter coming into there lesson, as they take off their headscarf s. Mrs Bromley asked all the pupils in the lesson to show there hands if they felt comfortable with us recording them. Those who weren't where avoided as much as possible to ensure they where not accidently caught in the background of a shot.  This was difficult as they where all in a close proximity to each other, but we over came this obstical by lining the video camera suitably. In the end we got a large number of videos that we can choose from for our final piece that showed a variety of different skill and ability. During our lesson, we again uploaded the footage and continued on our blogs ensuring we where up to date. However, during lunch time we continued to do media as we had one last piece of footage to record. This footage would to be a pan of the school that would go aside the interview we previously recorded with Mrs Hampton.. This didn't take us long as it was a simple shot that required no consent and little preparation  We already had the video camera and tripod from this mornings recording so we simply had to just go and record. This meant we would have a bit of time toward the end of lunch to export the files onto Miss Merrick's laptop and then into our Ginsburg drive.

Mon 4th Feburay 2013

During this lesson, I had a psychology conference and therefore couldn't attend the lesson. This was a disadvantage as I missed out on the new deadline set which was to complete make a start on creating or video.

tue 5th Febuary 2013

Today, i was informed of the deadline set in detail and began to get used to the software. It was very simple and self explanatory. I decided to begin by just cutting bits out from the videos i wanted to use so the best bits could be shown in my feature. This was good because it would be more efficient as all I would have to do once completed was put into an order similar to my Story board and add effects. However, i didn't consider that this would be a lengthy way of starting my project. This further meant i only got 2 videos cropped in this lesson as i used a number of different sections from each video. Tomorrow i plan to continue editing the videos and finding the best bits out of them. An advantage from this lesson was that i got to understand how key parts work on the software and also how to edit videos to my desires.

wed 6th February 2013

During this lesson, I continued to edit each piece of footage in order to get all completed so I would then simply just have to put it in the same order as my story board. As i had four hours worth of lesson time today i managed to get it all completed and  began to consider them to my story board. However, as i have been concentrating a lot on making the video, I have not been keeping up with my blog. This will be a major issue for me later on as i may forget what has been done if i don't do it soon. We also went over everyone's videos on what they had done so far and we gave feedback. This was not only helpful for us getting feedback on our own work, but through hearing other peoples feedback, we got chance to pick up some ideas from their work that we can use for our own. For example, when we gave feedback on Maqsood's work, we discovered he used really good transitions and he had a number of powerful titles to promote the strengths of the PE department. I found this a good aspect to is video and considered to make similar version in my own. As we only spent the last hour of the day doing this; me, Sam and Dieter didn't have time to show our work. At the beginning of this lesson we aim to show our piece and get feedback on it. I came across some milestones that i needed help on in order to make the videos all the same size. By this, i mean some videos fill the whole screen where as others don't. With Mrs Merrick's help, i found out how to do it. It is also known as a scale shot, and to change it, you have to go into the toolbar of your preview window and click on effect controls. Once at this stage, where it says scale, you have to enlarge the number aside it to zoom in,, resulting in your video covering the full page.

thurs 7th February 2013

During this hour  As i hadn't put my work into an order yet, I had very little to show to gain feedback. Mrs Merrick was not happy at the amount of progress I had made as it wasn't plentiful and up to the standard it should have been at that stage. This was a major weakness i experienced through the day. However for the work i had done the main feedback i received was to move Mr Hutchinson's interview to the beginning as he introduces the video and to add the actual audio from the PE lessons as well as have the audio of the interviews. I took this on board and worked on it over the next few hours. Instead of attending my next  lesson I felt it would be best for me to miss it and continue to work on my video. By 4.30pm, i had a completed video, but just missed transitions and sound adjustment. This is something I plan to really focus on next lesson.

fri 8th Febuary 2013

This lesson was very full on as i had a lot to consider. The deadline was today and i had to add in all my transitions and work on the sound. As i had two free periods, I came in early to do some work and get it completed as soon as possible  This was a strength as i was using my time wisely and worked on a few mistakes. It gave me the opportunity to pick up from where i left off and finish my video in a quicker time. As my video was rushed, It is not to the best of my ability and i hope to get the chance to improve it. I played around with a few different transitions to ensure i was using the ones that best suited the topic of the video. By the end the lesson i had also added titles on to Mr Hutchinson and Mrs Hampton's interviews so it was clear to the people who didn't attend the school who they where and their roles in the school. I also added credits to the end of my work and a clip of Mr Hutchinson running at the camera to add a hint of humour. I felt this would be a strength as it would add a slight hint of fun into the video to show the schools not as serious as it may seem in the rest of the video. It will show both the friendly fun side and the committed hardworking side the PE department has. However the system froze just before i was about to leave and didn't save all the titles and the clip i last added. Which meant i had to wait till Monday to finish it off completely  which is a major set back as i have again been behind on a deadline.  Next lesson i aim to start where i left of and get everything back to how it was before the software broke down.

Monday 11th February 2013

Today we was sent an email from Mrs Merrick giving our next instructions for the next part of our project. This was to simply gain market research on our video we have been creating the past few weeks, and gather as much information on it as we can. The first steps we had to do where to export our video and put it in our drop box account. I struggled with this as i had never used drop box, and therefore would have taken a long time to create an account and figure how to use it. Instead, it was suggested to simply upload of video to you tube, and send the link to people. This is a good idea as it saves a lot of time, which would further give me time to catch up on previous work as at the minuet i am slightly behind due to our delays in our recording schedule. However, the issue with sending links online is that people may not respond, therefore minimizing your chance of a large range in response rate. I would rather video record our market research instead of relying on emailing people. This is because if comments are made by the students that aren't recorded on a questionnaire we will give them, we will be able to look back on the videos and reflect on what they have said to improve our work. This is a task we have been set, and our deadline is next Monday  As all my previous work has been slightly behind i will ensure this deadline will be met and my work will be high standard. During this lesson, I had to spend the first hour going over my video as the adjustments I made during Fridays lesson didn't save due to the software freezing and not saving my work. This was a disadvantage as it was yet another set back for me and completing my work. Another disadvantage was that i couldn't find the humours clip of Mr Hutchinson so i couldn't re add that to my work. This left me with a low quality video that needed a lot more work to meet perfectionism as the rest of the groups.  However an advantage was that i got to re watch it a few more times to ensure i had added transitions and it was as good as i could do in the short space of time I had. In the second hour of our double lesson, I exported my video to my desktop in a more appropriate format, and then uploaded it to YouTube. As i had never exported on the Adobe Premiere Pro software before, i wasn't sure how to export my video as considerations such as the resolution had to be considered, which was further dependent on what camera type you used.

Tue 12th February 2013

During this day we decided to add screen shots to our post production considerations that we had been previously set to complete during our editing last week. We decided to do this as at the beginning of the lesson we where asked to show Mrs Merrick that we had done this task and it was up to a proffesional level. As me and Dieter we both realized we needed to add screen shots of our work to make it more appealing and to get a higher grade. We went through each consideration and got as many as we could in the two hour space we had. All the screen shots where on the desktop but i only managed to put audio mixer tab, roll ripple and rate editing tools, file storage photos on there. I had to crop each photo so that it showed the specific area in which the consideration was talking about. This was a strength during this lesson as i got a better understanding of each and also got a lot of time to catch up and edit any parts of my work that i had too. However a weakness was that we had to consider our current deadline to get market research on our video, but it was put aside for today. This meant we could have spent this time more appropriately by beginning a questionnaire to send out. To ensure we are back on track tomorrow we will spend the day making and sending out our questionnaires.

Wed 13th February 2013

Today we made our questionnaire on survey monkey. This website is very good as it allows you to see your results and is very clear to understand. It also allows you to use open and closed questions which allow qualitative and quantitative data. Open questions allow detailed, rich data such as comments on a specific part of the video, where as closed questions give you a direct simple answer, such as rating your video. Both of which can help your decisions to improve your video for the schools PE department. I created 9 questions that would help me gain a better understanding of peoples ideas and thoughts in my video. I asked questions such as 'Has this video encouraged you to take part in sports?' and 'Do you like the transitions used between each shot? if so why? ' that would give me a range of different questions to work from. I then sent this to everyone in our class and a few people in year 13. I got my inspiration for question types from other people in the class as well as my own. The weakness of this was that it took me a long time to do all this and we could have gone and recorded interviews but it was too late as we missed lesson change over.

Thurs 14th February 2013

In this lesson, we again missed lesson change over which therefore meant we couldn't interview any main school students. This meant we had yet another catch up lesson where we caught up with our blogs and waited for responses from our surveys. I found that i had only received three responses so couldn't do any market research analysis or make graphs from my results. This is a weakness as the whole class couldn't really move on to the next stage to meet our deadline as we had little/no replies. However it is a positive as we had time to catch up and get up to date on our blogs.

Fri 15th February 2013

During this lesson I discovered my video that i believed to had lost on the 8th last week. This is because i saved my video into my home drive in my folder in Ginsburg and a further folder made in my Ginsburg area so i would have a back up if one broke or couldn't retrieve my video. This meant i still had the edits and improvements I made that would make my video look much more professional. Therefore, i decided to upload this to YouTube just as i did with the other one so i would have a choice. This therefore meant i had two videos and i needed to resend my survey out. We didnt have much to do in this lesson as we were waiting for replies, and we could go and record an interview with a pupil about our video as it was during lesson time. This ment we had to just go over and catchup on bits of old work

Mon 25th February 2013

Today, we started new radio project where we was asked to create a 60 second news report and record it in the studio. We where asked to research a local international and national story along with traffic and weather. We used BBC to collect our information. Once we had found a story we recoded it on the notes app on the iPads. we then created and adjusted a script to fit the 60 second time barrier. We had to ensure some time was left in order to add the stingers and jingles. These are the quirky noises that can be used in-between reports to break it up and prevent the listener feeling tediously. During 3rd period, we went in studio and recorded me reading out the script.
